Finally in DC

Well, I'm here. It's been a trip with more or less constant motion, and even now, we're staying with some friends while we wait for our furniture to get here.

Pues, estoy aca.

Oh yeah, I packed my gis in our household goods. Which get here Monday. So.

Entonces.

In the meantime, I've done some homework, and the two academies I'm most likely to spend some time at, in no particular order:

Mientras tanto, he hecho algunas tareas, y las academias en que yo estoy mas probable de pasar tiempo:

Ryan Hall's 50/50 BJJ in Arlington

La academía de Ryan Hall, 50/50 BJJ, en Arlington

Royce Gracie's Capital BJJ in Alexandria

La academía de Royca Gracie, Capital BJJ, en Alexandria

The number one consideration is proximity - I would love to check out Lloyd Irvin's place, or the Yamasaki Academy, or any of the zillion awesome places here. But with the school schedule I know I'm going to have, it's got to be semi-close to my place. That's not to say I'm not going to do some visiting to other schools, but I can't pay visiting fees for my entire time, right?

At any rate, 2 weeks of not doing jits and eating and drinking whatever I feel like has taken its toll - I'm already feeling flabby and pathetic.

Instead of THIS guy

En vez de ESTE muchacho

I feel like THIS guy.

Me siento como ESTE muchacho.

Monday I'm GOING to a class, dammit.

  1. I train at Beta, a LI affiliate in DC. I've never been to the Royce school, but Ryan has a nice space with wall to wall mats and has some great people on the mats. The main Lloyd Irvin school might be a little far from VA, but it's a great space and they don't charge a drop-in fee, so if that's a consideration...

  2. I think all martial artists must share a common gene that makes us want to train hard, but live rich. And when I say rich, I do not mean rich in money, but rich in enjoyment. We tend to seize every moment and suck the meat off the bones.

  3. Definitely look up Elyse (Gringa BJJ) when you visit BETA.. :)

I plan on doing some training in Virginia over the holidays when we come to visit my family. We'll be in Norfolk through the 27th and then the Eastern Shore till the 2nd, but plan on hitting up DC for 2 days somewhere before NYE. I want to see the Smithsonian!

  5. I definitely understand the importance of proximity when choosing a school. I had several schools to choose from when moving to Atlanta, and I chose the one closest to my house (about a mile) and my office (about two blocks).

The closer the gym is to your home/work, the more likely you'll be to train.
