Last night went well. Had two people show, the two girls. Started with the same warmups, some light calisthenics, then into drills -
- Forward/backward rolls. Better than the first day, still working on the technique a little to clear the head. It is amazing what you take for granted in an established jiu jitsu class.
- Upa. No problems here.
- Upa. No hay problemas.
- Upa-and-turn. Talked about the application of this to the upa-and-roll escape from mount that we did last class (I am really intent on connecting and reinforcing lessons at this stage). This took a little work, but after a couple gos, they had it.
- Upa y girar.
- Hip escape. The major lesson for the day. I started off by having one of them just sit next to me, as though she were in side control. For me, this is important in that you can see WHY you would need to do a hip escape. I demo'd it, and they were both like "ohhhhhhhhh." Quick realization, which was cool.
Then the hard part - actually doing them. We started with planting one foot and using that, but I also showed them the two-foot version, and it quickly became apparent that the two-foot version was going to work better for both of them.
I remember learning how to do a hip escape, and it didn't make a damn bit of sense at first. So we did a couple few, then I had them alternate sitting on one side of the other person so they had that reference point of moving themselves away from their opponent.
Then worked in the finish of getting your bottom knee back in between you and your opponent.
Then worked backwards and started with the upa to create space, then do a hip escape. Demo'd a couple times by putting pressure on top from side control and having them go slowly through the upa, then escaping the hips. I've always found (when I can remember to do it) that if you do the upa first it makes SO much more of a difference in getting your hips out.
To finish up the class, we talked again about the closed guard and its purpose, then about the goal of improving your position (i.e. passing the guard, in this case). Then we did some basic position sparring from closed guard, again tying it back to the first lesson. The goal was simply to pass the guard (from top), and to prevent the other person from passing (from bottom).
It went well, they both really enjoyed the position sparring, and we all got a couple rolls in that way. Overall, a VERY successful lesson, smiles all around on the way out because they really seemed to understand what some of the goals were.
Chevere.
Okay now that I have actually read your new blogging I can post an actual comment.
ReplyDeleteCan I come to your class?! I realize having never actually met you this probably sounds idiotic, but I can totally see you in the roll of teacher!
I am really excited for you and your new class! I look forward to hearing more about it.
Ha! Well, anyone that wants to come to class here in Caracas, just let me know. :) I'll amaze you with my complete lack of knowledge.
ReplyDeleteI envy you. Yeah, yeah, I know it's tough to think of teaching something you're not entirely confident about being an expert in. BUT-- you get to start fresh, from the ground floor, and really think about what's the best way to start, and what comes next, and why-- I know this only improves your understanding and execution of technique. I really envy you. :)
ReplyDeleteI am loving hearing about all of this. I am going to pirate some of the techniques you're teaching. lol. Hip escapes, by the way, are impossible to teach to a 6 year old. Impossible for me anyway. My son wanted to do some bjj with me and I absolutely could not explain it to him. Fail, Allie.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of specific target sparring (or whatever you would call that). Great idea for getting them to understand the concept AND for beginners who don't know "what do to" it gives them a goal that isn't overwhelming.
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing!
